Story

In December 1970, there’s this strict classics teacher named Paul Hunham at Barton Academy. The students don’t like him because he grades them tough and is pretty stern. One day, he messes up by failing a student, and it leads to the school losing an important donor and Princeton University canceling his admission offer.

Now, during the holidays, Hunham has to babysit the students who stayed back, including Angus Tully and Mary Lamb. Angus’s mom cancels their vacation, and Mary is sad because her son died in the Vietnam War. It’s not a fun time.

Hunham decides to make the students study and exercise during the break. After a while, a rich kid’s dad shows up and takes everyone on a ski trip, except for Angus. He’s stuck with Hunham and Mary. There’s a funny chase, Angus dislocates his arm, and they end up in the hospital.

Angus lies to protect Hunham, and they go to a Christmas Eve party thrown by Lydia, a school administrator. Things get awkward when Angus spills the beans about his dead dad, and Mary calls out Hunham for being insensitive. Hunham feels bad and decides to throw a small Christmas celebration for them.

Later, they go on a “field trip” to Boston. Hunham reveals he got kicked out of Harvard for hitting a guy who framed him for plagiarism. They have a heart-to-heart, and it turns out both Hunham and Angus deal with depression.

Next morning, they find out they’re both on medication for depression. They go see a movie, Angus sneaks away, and they discover his supposedly dead dad is actually alive but mentally ill. They have a heartwarming dinner, reassuring Angus about his future.

On New Year’s Eve, they celebrate together, and it’s touching. When school starts, Angus’s mom and stepdad blame Hunham for everything. He gets fired but stands up for Angus. Mary gives him a notebook for a monograph he wanted to write. Hunham and Angus say goodbye, and Hunham leaves, spitting out some stolen cognac towards the school.
