Story
Evelyn Quan Wang and her husband Waymond are facing troubles in their lives. They run a laundromat and are being audited by the IRS. Waymond wants to talk about their marriage and tries to serve Evelyn divorce papers to get her attention. Evelyn’s father, Gong Gong, is visiting for the Chinese New Year party. Their daughter Joy is going through depression and has a strained relationship with Evelyn, especially regarding Joy’s non-Chinese girlfriend, Becky.
During the IRS meeting, something strange happens. Waymond’s body is taken over by Alpha-Waymond, who is from a parallel universe. Alpha-Waymond tells Evelyn about the multiverse and how every choice creates a new universe. He explains that Jobu Tupaki, a version of their daughter Joy, is threatening the multiverse with a dangerous device.
Evelyn is given technology to jump between universes to fight Jobu’s minions. Along the way, she sees different versions of herself where she made different choices. Alpha-Waymond believes Evelyn has the potential to defeat Jobu. But Alpha-Gong Gong tells Evelyn to kill Joy to stop Jobu, which Evelyn refuses to do.
As they fight, Jobu kills Alpha-Waymond in his universe. Jobu confronts Evelyn, and Evelyn’s mind starts to break. She jumps between universes uncontrollably with Jobu. Jobu reveals she wants to use the dangerous device to let herself and Evelyn truly die.
Evelyn is initially persuaded but has an epiphany when she hears Waymond’s advice about being kind and embracing life’s absurdities. She decides to fight with empathy instead of cruelty. She reconciles with Waymond, accepts Joy and Becky’s relationship, and saves Jobu from the dangerous device.
In the end, their family relationships improve, and they go back to the IRS to refile their taxes. Evelyn briefly sees her alternative selves but then focuses on her home universe, grounded in her family and their love for each other.
