Story
Barbie and her doll friends live in a place called Barbieland. In Barbieland, the Barbies have important jobs like doctors and lawyers, while the Kens like to play at the beach. Some dolls with unique traits are treated as outcasts.
One day, Barbie becomes worried about getting older and faces some changes in her appearance. She learns from a disfigured doll named Weird Barbie that she needs to find the child playing with her in the real world to cure her problems. Ken wants to help and joins her on a journey.
They go to Venice Beach, where Barbie gets into trouble for standing up against inappropriate behavior. Mattel, the company that makes the dolls, tries to capture them. Barbie finds out her owner is a girl named Sasha, who criticizes Barbie for promoting unrealistic beauty standards.
Barbie, Sasha, and Sasha’s mom, Gloria, escape from Mattel and go back to Barbieland. Ken learns about equality and convinces the Kens to change their ways. However, things don’t go back to how they were in Barbieland. Barbie feels sad, but Gloria gives her a pep talk about women facing conflicting expectations.
With the help of Sasha, Weird Barbie, and other dolls, they fix the problems in Barbieland. The Barbies decide to treat everyone better, including the Kens and outcasts. Barbie and Ken apologize to each other, and Barbie decides to explore her identity.
Barbie meets the spirit of Ruth Handler, the person who created Barbie, and learns that her story doesn’t have a fixed ending. Barbie decides to become human and go back to the real world. The Barbies and Kens say goodbye, and Barbie, now called Barbara Handler, goes for her first gynecologist appointment with Sasha and her family.
